Retailer reports $20,000 liquor loss

Event Details:
Mark Schlachtenhaufen The Edmond Sun EDMOND — An Edmond retailer reported a burglary and the loss of $20,000 worth of liquor, an incident report states. At about 8:18 a.m. Sunday, Police Officer Jeff Smith was dispatched in reference to a reported burglary to Smithcot Liquors, 217 S. Coltrane, according to Smith’s incident report. An employee of a neighboring business said he opened at 4 a.m., and it must have happened before then, Smith stated. The reporting party, the business owner, said sometime during the night the back metal door had been drilled out and cut with a torch about a third of the way up from the ground, Smith stated. Fourteen bottles of liquor valued at $20.99 were left outside, not taken by the suspects, Smith stated. Smith stated the reporting party took him inside the business and showed him a large storage room located on the other side of the breached door. The reporting party said all the items taken were high-dollar liquor, Smith stated. Numerous bottles of wine were taken out of their boxes and placed on the ground in the room, and the empty boxes were used to carry the bottles of liquor out, Smith stated. Smith stated the reporting party believes the suspects must have stayed low to avoid a motion sensor to avoid setting off the alarm. Smith stated Edmond Security reported the alarm was on and it was not disturbed all night. Smith stated the damage to the door is valued at $500 and a preliminary estimate of the value of the stolen liquor is $20,000. When he asked the reporting party if any of his employees had been recently fired, he said two had been fired since January 2013, Smith stated. The reporting party said he did not believe either of them would be capable of committing the theft, Smith stated. Smith stated there is no suspect information at this time. Edmond Police Department personnel processed the wine bottles for possible prints and to photograph the damaged property, which is insured, Smith stated. The reporting party said he will provide a detailed list of the items stolen and value as soon as he can determine precisely what was stolen, Smith said. | 341-2121, ext. 108 - See more at:
