You're a mom or a child at home alone, I want you to think of a person that you would fear if you ran into them in a secluded place, they are knocking on your door, what do you do?
When I have asked this question over the last 30 years the answer is,
ACKNOWLEDGE THE DOOR! As you approach the door YELL, "HONEY I'LL GET IT", or "DAD I'LL GET IT". Now "honey" or "dad" is also home and if the person on your porch does not belong they will make up a reason for being there and will quickly leave. This is when you call the police and give a description of them, their car, etc...
When someone does not answer they leave the porch (you drop your guard because they left) and they go to a door or window where they won't be seen breaking into a home.
NEVER unlock the door, get an inexpensive intercom for the front door, or simply use the lungs God gave us to tell a stranger everyone is home.
One time when I was having this conversation a women gasped, she said in the mid afternoon, a person we would have thought of as a "bad guy", driving an old beat up truck was ringing the doorbell. She opened the door and this stranger was standing on her porch with a tool box, he said he was there to tune the piano. She said you must have the wrong address, the guy jumped in his truck and quickly left. She will not open the door in this situation again.
