Ladies night at Club Rodeo ended in a shootout involving four University of Oklahoma police officers working off-duty jobs, leaving one man dead and two injured early this morning.

The dead man was identified as Lance Dawkins, 24, of Edmond.

Oklahoma City police identified the injured men as Johnny Mixon, 23, of Midwest City and Bryan Bonner, 24, of The Village.

Mixon is in critical condition at OU Medical Center. Bonner suffered a graze wound and was treated and released at a hospital.

Shortly after closing, about 2:30 a.m., a disturbance that had started inside the club at 2301 S Meridian Ave. turned deadly. Witnesses said they heard multiple rounds fired in the parking lot to the west of the club.

Police said security guards were directing people outside when a disturbance broke out inside. As they were clearing patrons out of the parking lot, one man produced a gun and opened fire on security.

The off-duty OU police officers returned fire, striking the men.

Oklahoma City police Sgt. Jennifer Wardlow identified the four OUPD officers working security for the club as Joshua Keith, Curtis Condery, Kevin Moses and David Ross. OU spokeswoman Catherine Bishop said the officers work at the OU Health Sciences Center campus in Oklahoma City, and all have been placed on administrative leave.

Numerous shell casings marked by yellow tags and bullet holes in a car could be seen at daybreak in the large parking lot on the west side of the club.

A burgundy-colored car riddled with bullet holes in the windshield, and a bright metallic blue car with tinted windows and oversize wheels were towed from the parking lot after a body was removed from one of the cars.

There were numerous people in the parking lot when the incident occurred, Wardlow said. Most of them left before Oklahoma City police officers arrived. Investigators want to speak with anyone who was a potential witness to this shooting. Anyone with information should contact the Homicide Tip Line at 297-1200.

An answering machine message for the club advertises that on Wednesday nights, 25-cent longneck beers are offered until 11 p.m. A club spokesperson could not be immediately reached.
