We have trusted our home security to Paul Conrady and his company, Edmond Security, since 1999. They have never let us down.
He gets a little animated when I announce in one of my columns exactly when we will be gone and for how long. I tell him it is a good test of his equipment and system. Either folks have figured out that it is not worth the risk of breaking into a home protected by his company or they have figured out that we don’t have anything in our house worth the risk.
Conrady has a long service to the Edmond community. He has been working on a web site for two years that is poised to be his greatest contribution to date. The site is up and running at www.crimeseen.com. I would encourage you to go to the site to check it out. It will be better than that dog on television at taking a bite out of crime.
Crimeseen.com allows home and business owners alike to post pictures or videos of crimes being committed in the act. You can even sign up to have alerts sent to you when a crime is committed in your area. It not only gets the word out quickly but it puts the faces of those breaking the law in front of thousands in a flash.
As any law enforcement officer will tell you, the sooner the word gets out and the more eyes they have on the lookout, the better chance they have of solving the crime. With budgets strapped for most police departments, this is a welcome innovation to them. Our Edmond Police department has already signed up as a member.
The system takes advantage of all the social media out there as well. There is a map with links on this site that marks where the crime happened. The system takes advantage of a network of public cameras used for video surveillance. Instead of crime video getting seen by a handful of people, it can be posted to crimeseen.com for thousands to observe. This same network could be used to track someone who is missing to help narrow the search field. It also gives law enforcement one place to go to view all the different video camera shots.
The site has already been successful in identifying one possible criminal. There was a man on a video surveillance tape that was identified by one of his classmates from high school. It won’t be long before he is in custody explaining what he was up to on the video.
Crimeseen.com will become the standard for such sites and has national impact in its future. It comes as no surprise to us that Conrady is behind it and that it was developed right here in Edmond.
It would seem appropriate at this point to launch into some more dumb criminal stories. Here you go:
As they say, “Go Big or Go Home”
A lady in Macon, Ga., apparently was unsuccessful at cashing a fake check. The check came from an Illinois real estate company. She presented the check to bank employees with instructions to cash the check. These were not dumb bank employees however. They called the real estate company to verify if the check was real. It was not. Surprise!
Just what tipped them off? Well, it was probably that the check she asked to CASH was in the amount of $105,300. Good catch.
Juror fires up behind the courthouse
Here is real bright guy. He was a sworn juror who was returning to a Texas courthouse after a smoke break last week. When it came time to go through the metal detector, this genius placed his small plastic bag of pot in the change tray before going through the detector.
Needless to say, he was arrested on the spot and charged with a misdemeanor of second degree possession of marijuana. In the process of booking, officials also discovered that he is a registered sex offender. I guess one good thing came of it. He got excused from jury duty.
At least he was honest
It is just plain dumb to drink and drive any way you look at it. This guy just had to take it one step further. He probably should have just shut up and let them take him to jail.
Our brilliant DUI driver was arrested on suspicion of being under the influence last week. This is the first time he had been picked up for such a charge. This time he did manage to ram his car into a pole.
Troopers say that this 40 year old man was sitting on his rear bumper when they arrived on the scene. He told them, “I’ve been drinking and driving for 20 years and never got caught before tonight.” He went on to add, “I will be honest with you. I’ve had too much to drink tonight and I hit a pole.”
“No kidding” must have been their response.
Like father, like son
It is good to see fathers and sons doing more activities together, usually.
This was not your traditional activity for a father and son outing. It seems in Denver, Colo., a father and son team spent the afternoon getting wasted as they say. Then they decided to commit a burglary together according to the Denver Post.
During this family burglary, the son passed out. The father left him behind for the police. It gets better.
A neighbor who turned out to be the boy’s grandfather called police after the burglarized homeowner’s wife found the boy. Think about how that conversation will go around the holiday table.
