Burglars hit dog park, fitness and daycare centers

Mark Schlachtenhaufen The Edmond Sun

EDMOND — Burglars are hitting vehicles at Edmond fitness centers, daycare facilities and a dog park, police said.

Police spokeswoman Glynda Chu said two auto burglaries occurred Wednesday morning at the YMCA, 1220 S. Rankin Street.

Also today, at 8:30 a.m., at One Step at a Time daycare, 1724 Renaissance Blvd., witnesses saw a white male described as being 5-feet, 10-inches tall, weighing 250 pounds jumping into a waiting gold minivan with a Florida license plate, Chu said.

The suspect broke the driver’s side window of the victim’s vehicle and removed the property, Chu said. Loss was reported at $1,590. The sliding door on the van was standing open allowing for a quick getaway, Chu said.

On Tuesday, two auto burglaries were reported at the dog park at 450 E. 33rd St.

In one of the incidents, the total loss was valued at $1,070, according to a report filed by Edmond Police Officer Brad Griffin. Items stolen included a $575 purse, a $200 leather wallet, cash and a driver’s license. The repair bill for the broken window will be about $150.

In the second incident at the dog park, the total loss was valued at $745, according to a report filed by Griffin. Items stolen included a $300 leather purse, a $100 wallet, cash, a driver’s license, a Social Security card and prescription medication. The repair bill for the broken window will be about $250.

“Edmond police will be out saturating these type of target areas,” Chu said.

Chu urged residents to be aware of their surroundings and to not leave their purses, wallets or other valuables in their vehicles. By not leaving valuables in vehicles residents will be protecting themselves from becoming a victim of this frustrating crime, she said.

Residents who see anything suspicious are asked to call 911 immediately.
