Burglary suspects arrested after fiery crash
Two men suspected of burglary were arrested Thursday after a 2 ½-hour search in Cooper City.
Broward sheriff's deputies scoured the area looking for the pair while a helicopter assisted from above.
The men were found about 1:15 p.m. in the 5700 block of Southwest 119th Avenue, said BSO spokeswoman Veda Coleman-Wright.
Authorities believe the men were involved in a fiery collision at the busy intersection of Flamingo Road and Sheridan Street.
They were speeding down on Sheridan Street in a silver Ford Taurus about 10:40 a.m. when they crashed into a green BMW, deputies said.
The BMW's driver, George Long of Pembroke Pines, said he received only a cut on his cheek and had a throbbing headache. His car's windshield was smashed. ''I was broadsided by somebody,'' said Long, who could not describe the men in the car. ''I was knocked out.'' Someone pulled Long out of the car before he regained consciousness, he said.
The crash caused the hood of the silver Taurus to catch fire.
At least two men jumped out and ran away.
Another man from the vehicle was caught and arrested, BSO said.
''They were trying to get away from something,'' said Simon Flint, a witness.
Roads in the area were closed for about an hour, and Pembroke Pines Charter Middle School was on lockdown as deputies searched for the suspects.
